There is a difference between a cabin that is clean and a cabin that is ready, and you cannot tell which one you have by standing in the doorway with a clipboard. So we do not. Before the first guest of the season turns the key, someone from our family has spent a night in every cabin we offer. We light the stove cold in the dark. We find out which window whistles when the wind comes down off the ridge. We learn whether the bed is actually a good bed or just a bed that looks good made.
You learn things at two in the morning that you never learn on a walkthrough. Whether the lantern reaches the corner you want to read in. Whether the floor is cold under bare feet before the stove catches. Whether the quiet outside is the deep, settling quiet a person comes up here for, or the kind of quiet with a generator humming two ridges over. The small things are not small when you have driven three hours to get away from exactly that kind of noise.
It is more work than just hiring a cleaning crew and trusting the photos. We think it is the difference between renting a building and being handed a place that someone actually cared whether you would rest in.
